  • America's Creepy History

The first American conspiracy was the first colony, the lost colony, from England whom settled in Roanoke. The very first colony of England in the new World disappeared without any signs of struggle only to leave behind a mysterious message. Over 400 years ago, England made several attempts to establish colonies in what is now the United States. Some of the settlements were successful, some weren't, but the very first of them simply vanished. The famous Lost Colony arrived in the New World in 1585 with a little over one hundred settlers, and they built a small fort and village on Roanoke Island, off the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. Two years later, the first European baby was born on American soil to the daughter of the colony governor and one of his assistants. To celebrate, it ...

He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. What were the English doing in America, anyway? Lots of stuff. In Virginia, the colonists were largely there to make money. In Maryland, the idea was to create a a colony for Catholics who wanted to be serfs of the Lords Baltimore. In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims and Puritans came to America to find a place where they could freely persecute those who didn't share their beliefs. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. ...

The Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island in Dare County, present-day North Carolina, United States, was a late-16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement. The enterprise was financed and organized originally by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who drowned in 1583 during an aborted attempt to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir Humphrey Gilbert's half brother Sir Walter Raleigh would gain his brother's charter from Queen Elizabeth I and subsequently would execute the details of the charter through his delegates Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville, Raleigh's distant cousin

To celebrate, it was decided that the governor would return to England to request a replenishment of supplies and share the news of the birth with England's people. Unfortunately, when he arrived England was at war, and needed every ship available to fight the Spanish Armada, and governor White was not able to return to Roanoke for three years. When he returned in 1590, the settlement was deserted and all the buildings had been carefully dismantled. The colonists were never seen again. There were no signs of any struggle or battle. Strangely, the only clues left from the settlement were a skeleton and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post of one of the fences that surrounded the village. The word “CRO” had also been carved nearby into a tree. Before the governor of the colony left, he instructed the settlement to carve a Maltese cross onto a tree nearby if the colony was gone due to force…but this was no found. Some claim they were massacred by enemy natives who feared tribal prophecies, but this doesn’t make sense…as there were no signs of any struggle or battle…just a carefully dismantled settlement with no one there. And what did the words CROATOAN and CRO mean?....just what happened to these people? Use of the "The Leviathan" picture permitted by Jeff Chang. This upload is 100% Non Profit. I have made no money off this video. The Lost Colony of Roanoke takes a look at one of America's oldest and most interesting mysteries. What happened to the Colony of Roanoke? Why did they vanish so mysteriously, with literally no sign of what happened or where they went? The Roanoke Colony was established in 1585 in what known today as Dare County, North Carolina. Founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, it was one of England's first attempts at settlement in North America. Made up of 115 people, the colony was led by John White, an artist and friend of Raleigh's. The colony quickly realized they did not have nearly enough supplies for survival and a successful settlement. John White would end up sailing back to England, where it would be three years before his return due to England's war with Spain. Upon his return in 1590, White found the settlement deserted. No sign of the 90 men, 17 women, and 11 children who were set to begin a new life there. Over the years, there have been numerous possible explanations. One theory is that the settlers were attacked and killed by Native Americans. The settlers quickly began to make trouble with the Natives, due to issues that came about dealing with trading. Both the settlers, and the natives would end up in numerous tense situations, both sides would kill members of the other, including raids on the other sides encampments, regardless of how small the provocation was. Another possibility is that they moved, likely to what was known then as Croatoan Island. White and his men were unable to search the island to confirm this theory. However, the word "Croatoan" was carved into a tree, meaning it was possibly a sign of where they went, left by a settler. The last widely accepted possibility is that the colonists integrated with Native American's. Not all tribes were hostile towards the settlers. To this day, there are people of Native descent in the area that have various non Native features, such as blue eyes or light skin. In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. Trouble growing food and trouble with the natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. So kick back, light up a smoke, and learn how America became profitable. DON'T SMOKE, THOUGH! THAT WAS A JOKE! Tun on the captions, you'll like them! Later that year, it was decided that John White, governor of the new colony, would sail back to England in order to gather a fresh load of supplies. But just as he arrived, a major naval war broke out between England and Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I called on every available ship to confront the mighty Spanish Armada. In August 1590, White finally returned to Roanoke, where he had left his wife and daughter, his infant granddaughter (Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas) and the other settlers three long years before. He found no trace of the colony or its inhabitants, and few clues to what might have happened, apart from a single word—“Croatoan”—carved into a wooden post.
