The first American conspiracy was the first colony, the lost colony, from England whom settled in Roanoke. The very first colony of England in the new World disappeared without any signs of struggle only to leave behind a mysterious message. Over 400 years ago, England made several attempts to establish colonies in what is now the United States. Some of the settlements were successful, some weren't, but the very first of them simply vanished. The famous Lost Colony arrived in the New World in 1585 with a little over one hundred settlers, and they built a small fort and village on Roanoke Island, off the Atlantic coast of North Carolina. Two years later, the first European baby was born on American soil to the daughter of the colony governor and one of his assistants. To celebrate, it was decided that the governor would return to England to request a replenishment of supplies and share the news of the birth with England's people. Unfortunately, when he arrived England was at war, and needed every ship available to fight the Spanish Armada, and governor White was not able to return to Roanoke for three years. When he returned in 1590, the settlement was deserted and all the buildings had been carefully dismantled. The colonists were never seen again. There were no signs of any struggle or battle. Strangely, the only clues left from the settlement were a skeleton and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post of one of the fences that surrounded the village. The word “CRO” had also been carved nearby into a tree. Before the governor of the colony left, he instructed the settlement to carve a Maltese cross onto a tree nearby if the colony was gone due to force…but this was no found. Some claim they were massacred by enemy natives who feared tribal prophecies, but this doesn’t make sense…as there were no signs of any struggle or battle…just a carefully dismantled settlement with no one there. And what did the words CROATOAN and CRO mean?....just what happened to these people? Use of the "The Leviathan" picture permitted by Jeff Chang. In which John Green teaches you about the (English) colonies in what is now the United States. He covers the first permanent English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, the various theocracies in Massachusetts, the feudal kingdom in Maryland, and even a bit about the spooky lost colony at Roanoke Island. But there was a healthy profit motive in Massachusetts as well. Profits were thin at first, and so were the colonists. Trouble growing food and trouble with the natives kept the early colonies from success. Before long though, the colonists started cultivating tobacco, which was a win for everyone involved if you ignore the lung cancer angle. So kick back, light up a smoke, and learn how America became profitable. DON'T SMOKE, THOUGH! THAT WAS A JOKE! Tun on the captions, you'll like them! "The Lost Colony of Roanoke" The Roanoke Colony, also known as the Lost Colony, was established on Roanoke Island in what is today's Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It was a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement in North America. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colonists disappeared during the Anglo-Spanish War, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England. Their disappearance gave rise to the nickname "The Lost Colony." There has been no conclusive evidence as to what happened to the colonists. In 1587, Raleigh dispatched a new group of 115 colonists to establish a colony on Chesapeake Bay. They were led by John White, an artist and friend of Raleigh who had accompanied the previous expeditions to Roanoke, and was later appointed governor. White and Raleigh named 12 assistants to aid in the settlement. They were ordered to travel to Roanoke to check on the settlers, but when they arrived on July 22, 1587, they found nothing except a skeleton that may have been the remains of one of the English garrison. When they could find no one, the fleet's commander Simon Fernandez refused to let the colonists return to the ships, insisting that they establish the new colony on Roanoke. His motives remain unclear. White re-established relations with the Croatoan and other local tribes, but those with whom Lane had fought previously refused to meet with him. Shortly thereafter, colonist George Howe was killed by a native while searching alone for crabs in Albemarle Sound. Fearing for their lives, the colonists persuaded Governor White to return to England to explain the colony's desperate situation and ask for help. Left behind were about 115 colonists – the remaining men and women who had made the Atlantic crossing plus White's newly born granddaughter Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas. Twelve years went by before Raleigh decided to find out what happened to his colony. Led by Samuel Mace, this 1602 expedition differed from previous voyages in that Raleigh bought his own ship and guaranteed the sailors' wages so that they would not be distracted by privateering. However, Raleigh still hoped to make money from the trip, and Mace's ship landed in the Outer Banks to gather aromatic woods or plants such as sassafras that would generate a decent profit back in England. By the time they could turn their attention to the colonists, the weather had turned bad and they were forced to return without even making it to Roanoke Island. By this time, having been arrested for treason, Raleigh was unable to send any further missions. There was one final expedition in 1603 led by Bartholomew Gilbert with the intention of finding Roanoke colonists. Their intended destination was Chesapeake Bay, but bad weather forced them to land in an unspecified location near there. The landing team, including Gilbert himself, was killed by a group of Native Americans for unknown reasons on July 29. The remaining crew were forced to return to England empty-handed. Meanwhile, the Spanish had different reasons for wanting to find the colony. Knowing of Raleigh's plans to use Roanoke as a base for privateering, they were hoping to destroy it. Moreover, they had been getting mostly inaccurate reports of activities there, and they imagined the colony to be far more successful than it actually was. In 1590, they found the remnants of the colony purely by accident, but assumed it was only an outlying base of the main settlement, which they believed was in the Chesapeake Bay area (John White's intended location). But just as the Anglo-Spanish War prevented White from returning in a timely manner, Spanish authorities in the New World could not muster enough support back home for such a venture.
